Moraic mismatches in Somali phonology

چکیده
This paper reconsiders the moraic status of coda consonants in Somali. It is argued that Somali joins a growing list languages presenting challenge to Moraic Uniqueness Hypothesis. Several phenomena are explored suggest exhibits mismatches whereby moras associated with segments different types contribute to, or “count” differently for particular phonological processes. Evidence support this proposal drawn from literature on tonology and poetic metrics, but also word shape minimality requirements, distribution syllable shapes words. an approach phonology permits reference segment offers unified more transparent account language’s segmental tonal phenomena. Notably, such precludes assumption “early” consonant moraicity followed by global dissociation consonantal rule before high tone assignment, as earlier work. The findings presented here illustrate standing points view role mora must be reconfigured.

متن کاملThe representation of Japanese moraic nasals.
Nasal consonants in syllabic coda position in Japanese assimilate to the place of articulation of a following consonant. The resulting forms may be perceived as different realizations of a single underlying unit, and indeed the kana orthographies represent them with a single character. In the present study, Japanese listeners' response time to detect nasal consonants was measured. Nasals in cod...
متن کاملDschang Syllable Structure and Moraic Aspiration
The syllable structure of Dschang is interesting for a variety of reasons. Most notable is the aspiration which can appear on most consonant types, including voiced stops. I shall argue that aspiration is best viewed as moraic, contributing to the weight of a syllable. An understanding of the syllable structure also gives valuable insights into the phonemic inventory and the distributional asym...
متن کاملChildhood vaccine beliefs reported by Somali and non-Somali parents.
BACKGROUND In 2011, an outbreak of measles in Minnesota was traced back to an unvaccinated Somali child. The purpose of this project was to (1) ascertain whether Somali parents are more likely than non-Somalis to refuse childhood vaccinations, particularly the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and (2) determine what factors influence the decision not to vaccinate. METHODS We explored parent...
